Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the current ethical issues in information technology (IT). It examines an array of long-standing and emerging issues facing IT users, ranging from free speech, privacy, intellectual property, security and crime. The course will discuss the ethical responsibilities of IT professionals, and promote the critical examination and responsible use of IT.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will identify ethical theories and principals for decision making by:
- differentiating among a wide variety of ethical theories
- defining and analyzing important ethical terms and concepts
- describing major ethical theories.
- The student will apply critical thinking skills, ethical principles and reasonable decision making to resolve ethical issues associated with IT by:
- explaining the role of critical thinking skills in practical ethical decision-making
- applying the philosophical principles to resolve ethical dilemmas when presented with actual and hypothetical ethical issues
- describing the distinguishing characteristics necessary for practical ethical decision-making in IT.
- The student will synthesize their own IT code of ethics by:
- using logical reasoning to organize, develop and defend a solution when presented with actual and hypothetical ethical dilemmas of a social, business or professional nature
- evaluating strengths and weakness of a variety of augments on contemporary ethical issues.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of this course the student will demonstrate, with minimum 70% accuracy, mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors.
