(Admission to Veterinary Technology (Bachelor of Applied Science) (VETTC-BAS) or
Admission to Veterinary Practice Management (Certificate with Financial Aid Eligibility) (VETTC-CT))

Course Description

This course will prepare the student to manage the human resource cycle in its entirety in the veterinary hospital including the care of employees while in the organization.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will review common staffing issues and supervisory challenges in veterinary facilities by:
    1. describing the challenges of meeting the organization’s employment needs.
    2. comparing effective staffing processes.
    3. evaluating staffing practices in relation to labor legislation.
  2. The student will apply human resource management (HRM) activities by:
    1. analyzing human resource trends in recruiting and hiring of veterinary professionals.
    2. comparing effective staff training programs for veterinary professionals.
    3. describing strategies for retaining veterinary professionals.
  3. The student will analyze factors affecting employee trust and commitment by:
    1. describing how to earn, develop, and retain employee trust.
    2. evaluating what employees want and expect from their employer.
    3. evaluating how an organization addresses the safety and health of its stake holders.
  4. The student will explain performance practices by:
    1. discussing base and incentive pay issues.
  5. The student will evaluate supervisory skills that they need to attain professional competence by:
    1. comparing performance appraisal processes.
    2. completing content quizzes.
    3. completing self-assessments.
    4. examining, through self-reflection, supervisory skills strengths and weaknesses.
    5. writing a summary of supervisory skill reflections.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
