Course Description
This course offers opportunities to practice the principles and theory of community health nursing in a community setting. Included are the identification of health care needs of the community as a client and the nurse’s role as a facilitator, teacher, and evaluator in promoting and maintaining health and wellness.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will promote wellness in a population in the community by:
- assessing individual members of the population.
- identifying factors that place the population at risk for health deviations.
- initiating strategies, including teaching, to promote wellness.
- The student will complete a community wellness project using the tools of public health and community health nursing by:
- designing a health program to address factors that place community wellness at risk.
- working in partnership with community stakeholders on the appropriateness of the program.
- delivering an evidence-based health promotion program.
- The student will integrate critical thinking in the process of making decisions regarding community health care by:
- analyzing accessible community resources in meeting identified community needs.
- incorporating principles of community health in development of health promotion activities.
- evaluating the effectiveness of the health promotion project.
- The student will collaborate with members of the community and other members of the health care team to optimize the health benefits of the community by:
- utilizing resources of the community in meeting health care needs.
- including community members in developing health care strategies.
- advocating for community members.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
