Course Description

This course is a study of non-Western cultures, including the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Emphasis is placed on acquiring knowledge of non-Western arts, values, and ideas relative to Western culture and developing an awareness of a world community. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. (Credit is only given for both HUM 2270 or HUM 2270H.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will trace the styles and aesthetic elements of selected non-Western cultures as expressed through their visual arts, literature, philosophy, and music by:
    1. comparing and contrasting the cultural and intellectual aspects of each culture's major historical periods.
    2. identifying examples of arts, literature, and music of the non-Western cultures.
  2. The student will identify the relationships and contrasts among different non-Western cultural ideas and arts by:
    1. recalling the primary cultural and intellectual aspects of each culture.
    2. comparing and contrasting the cultural and intellectual aspects of each culture.
    3. discussing the similarities and differences between Western and non-Western cultural values.
  3. The student will relate the humanities to cultural activities in the community by:
    1. attending or visiting and constructing a critical report on some aspect of non-Western art either presented as a live performance or on exhibit in the student's local community.
    2. recognizing, using insights gained in the course, the techniques and skills used by non-Western artists whose performance and/or work the student has experienced.
  4. The student will explore non-Western philosophical concepts of self, society, nature and religion as expressed in selected non-Western cultures by:
    1. explaining non-Western approaches on the basis of morality, effectiveness and universality.
    2. discovering the origins of many present-day non-Western values.
  5. The student will compose meaningful, content-oriented written exercises by:
    1. writing critical reports of cultural activities.
    2. using primary and/or secondary sources to analyze the historical, religious, philosophical, and/or artistic influences on various works of art.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors. The writing will meet the criteria of at least Level 3 in the SPC Analytical Rubric for Writing.
