Course Description
This course will focus on implementing cultural competence practices within diverse populations of human services delivery. Students will identify their own perspectives so they can be effective counselors and practitioners when working with clients from different cultural backgrounds.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- Students will examine multicultural perspectives in human services by:
- Differentiating concepts of cultural diversity and intergroup relations within human services delivery and practices
- Identifying and analyzing cultural competencies needed in human service providers that promote social mobility, positive identification, and racial equality
- Interpreting multicultural experiences from one’s own worldview in addition to the perspectives of others
- Identifying, practicing, and demonstrating behaviors conducive to multicultural competence in cultural contexts other than one’s own
- Students will examine the importance of cultural sensitivity in different ethnic groups through the perspectives of socio-economic status, age, gender, and/or language by:
- Applying techniques and strategies effective in providing services in cross-cultural contexts
- Role-playing relevant vignettes to practice delivery of services in cross-cultural contexts
- Students will examine culture bias in human service delivery and practices in society by:
- Exploring how their own values, attitudes, and biases affect the cross-cultural counseling process
- Analyzing and demonstrating culturally responsive and effective practices in working with diverse clients
- Implementing feedback provided by the instructor and/or classmates
- Students will examine mental health issues relevant for culturally diverse clients by:
- Analyzing techniques specific to the racial, ethnic, and cultural identity in adults as a result of stress, trauma, and substance abuse and misuse.
- Critically evaluating case studies to identify and explain cultural competencies and evidence-based interventions for culturally diverse clients
Criteria Performance Standard
For successful completion of this course, the student will receive a minimum of 70% and demonstrate mastery of the objectives and measures developed by the course instructors.
