Course Description

This course examines Western cultural and aesthetic perspectives from the Baroque to the Contemporary periods with an emphasis on the visual, literary, philosophical, and performing arts. (Note: This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements.) Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will trace the development of Western culture from the Baroque to the Contemporary periods as expressed through its visual arts, literature, philosophy, and music by:
    1. recalling the primary culture and intellectual aspects of each historical period.
    2. comparing and contrasting the cultural and intellectual aspects of each historical period.
    3. recognizing the evolution of values through the ages.
  2. The student will identify the interdependence of the humanities and the sciences from the Baroque to Contemporary periods by:
    1. summarizing the important scientific discoveries of each period.
    2. contrasting the cause and effect relationship between scientific discoveries and intellectual/cultural movements.
  3. The student will relate the humanities to cultural activities in their community by:
    1. attending or visiting and constructing a critical report on some aspect of art either presented as live performance or on exhibit in the student’s local community.
    2. recognizing, using insights gained in the course, the techniques and skills used by artists whose performance and/or work the student has experienced.
  4. The student will explore Western philosophical approaches to the self, society, and nature by:
    1. comparing and contrasting changing concepts of the individual, society and nature through the Baroque to Contemporary periods.
    2. evaluating values concerning the self, society and nature in the fine and performing arts throughout the Baroque and Contemporary periods.
  5. The student will compose meaningful, content-oriented written exercises by:
    1. writing critical reports of cultural activities.
    2. using primary and/or secondary sources to analyze the historical, religious, philosophical, and/or artistic influences on various works of art.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 70 percent accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors. The writing will meet the criteria of at least Level 3 in the SPC Analytical Rubric for Writing.
