Course Description
This course is an introduction to the basic coding principles of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system. Students will learn to code diagnoses that describe patient illnesses, diseases, conditions, injuries, or other reasons for seeking healthcare services.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explore the role of a medical coder by:
- explaining the use and development of the ICD classification system.
- identifying, defining, and applying standard abbreviations, guides, punctuation marks and instructional notes of ICD coding.
- explaining the basic structure and components of the ICD-CM coding book.
- applying the ICD-CM official guidelines for coding and reporting.
- summarizing the steps in coding.
- explaining the scope of the medical coder.
- discussing coding resources and their required updates.
- The student will apply conventions of ICD-CM coding by:
- utilizing coding guidelines and other coding resources to accurately assign diagnoses.
- discussing the assignment and sequencing of codes.
- selecting and coding diagnoses using various case studies.
- accurately coding diagnoses and diseases from various body systems.
- The student will summarize how to code each body system by:
- identifying similarities and differences of each body system and explaining why the coding is unique to each system.
- identifying the anatomical structures of each body system.
- explaining conditions that involve each body system.
- applying the ICD-CM coding guidelines to accurately code diseases of each body system.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 78% percent accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors.
