Course Description

This course is a study of various epochs of Western culture from the ancient to Renaissance periods with emphasis on analysis and synthesis of ideas and structure in the visual arts, literature, philosophy, and music. It stresses development of personal aesthetic sensibilities and commitment to intellectual curiosity. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. (Note: Credit is only given for HUM 2210 or IDS 1101H or HUM 2210H. (Students who received credit for HUM 2250 cannot also receive credit for HUM 2210 or HUM 2233.))

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will trace the ideas, values, and forms of Western culture from the Ancient to Renaissance periods as expressed through visual arts, literature, philosophy, and music by:
    1. analyzing selected primary sources.
    2. using independent research to distinguish cultural characteristics of the various epochs.
  2. The student will synthesize the historical, philosophical, and artistic relationships from the Ancient to the Renaissance periods by:
    1. identifying cause and effect of historical, philosophical, and artistic changes from age to age.
    2. making connection between the themes, forms, and ideas from early Western civilization with the present.
    3. organizing information gathered in a) and b) above into a coherent unit.
  3. The student will explore Western philosophical approaches to self, society, and nature by:
    1. comparing and contrasting changing concepts of the individual, society and nature through the use of primary sources from the Ancient to Renaissance periods.
    2. evaluating values concerning the self, society and nature in fine and performing arts through the Ancient to Renaissance periods.
  4. The student will assess the relationships of the arts to the community in which they exist by:
    1. defining the role of the visual, musical, and literary arts in a community.
    2. evaluating the architectural design and urban planning within the local community in terms of their effects on the cultural life of the community’s inhabitants.
    3. attending an art exhibit, musical concert, literary reading, theater performance, and/or dance concerts.
  5. The student will establish an independent and critical aesthetic value system in the context of Western cultural traditions by:
    1. discussing standards by which works in music, literature, and art are judged.
    2. attending, analyzing and writing critical evaluations of art exhibits, concerts, plays, films, or other similar cultural activities in the community, preferably SPC sponsored galleries, productions, and performances.
    3. discussing and comparing her/his aesthetic values with classmates who have attended the same cultural activities.
  6. The student will demonstrate her/his ability in composition by:
    1. researching the historical, religious, philosophical, and/or artistic relationships among the various cultures using primary and secondary sources.
    2. analyzing the historical, religious, philosophical, and/or artistic relationships among the various cultures using expository writing techniques.
    3. synthesizing the historical, religious, philosophical, and/or artistic relationships among the various cultures using expository writing techniques.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student, with a minimum 80 percent level of achievement, will demonstrate the accomplishment of the above stated objectives though classroom measures developed by the instructor. The writing will meet the criteria of at least Level 4 in the SPC Analytical Rubric for Writing.
