Course Description

This course is a foundation course developing knowledge and perception of two-dimensional form and its elements. This course is an introduction to basic design concepts, skills and processes necessary for all art careers.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will apply the elements and principles of design in a specified number of projects by:
    1. Identifying and implementing the visual elements and the properties of each
    2. Identifying the principles of design as they apply to the visual elements.
  2. The student will use a variety of techniques and skills in the realization of their design projects by:
    1. Creating with a wide variety of materials in order to solve each design problem
    2. Applying graphic media and techniques appropriate for fine and applied arts
    3. Completing both monochromatic and polychromatic designs in order to understand the parameters of the design process
  3. The student will analyze and evaluate design projects by:
    1. Utilizing the vocabulary of the element and principles of design in order to discuss design projects during oral and/or written critiques
    2. Assessing the quality of a design project during oral and/ or written critiques
    3. Implementing the design process and creative problem solving to compose solutions for each problem raised

Criteria Performance Standard

Each assignment will be evaluated by the instructor based on the A-B-C-D-F scale. The instructor will evaluate mastery of the course objectives through assessment of each student's portfolio and outside assignments, using a 70 percent minimum level of achievement.
