Course Description

This course begins with an exploration of teams and how they work. Process improvement teams create the opportunity to mix complementary technical work skills to improve a process. The coverage includes the principles and tools used by self-directed teams in identifying and solving problems in the workforce.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate being an effective team member by:
    1. developing a personal skills checklist.
    2. committing yourself to being part of the team’s success.
    3. building common understanding of the issues facing the team.
    4. following through on commitments.
    5. contributing to discussions.
    6. listening to understand.
    7. giving and accepting useful feedback.
  2. The student will organize and start a team by:
    1. preparing a start-up checklist.
    2. defining the team's purpose, mission, and goals.
    3. identifying the people and groups inside and outside the organization.
    4. identifying limits and expectations that can help the team.
    5. defining the team roles of its members.
  3. The student will practice working in a team by:
    1. developing a team work methods checklist.
    2. creating work plans.
    3. planning productive meetings.
    4. using data effectively in identifying issues.
    5. making good decisions.
    6. evaluating potential solutions.
    7. implementing changes through planning and communications.
    8. checking results and measures of progress.
    9. keeping records and documentation.
  4. The student will resolve team problems by:
    1. developing a checklist of common problems.
    2. handling conflict and disagreement.
    3. dealing with power and authority.
    4. dealing with overbearing experts.
    5. avoiding too much agreement.
    6. balancing team member’s participation.
    7. developing follow-throughs on problems.
  5. The student will demonstrate the process of ending a project by:
    1. developing a closure checklist.
    2. recognizing when the purpose of the team has been accomplished.
    3. identifying the changes and procedures for the new methods adopted.
    4. updating the appropriate documentation.
    5. completing the documentation using a storyboard for the process.
    6. evaluating the team’s work.
    7. sharing the team’s results with the organization.
    8. recognizing everyone’s contributions to the team’s achievements.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
