Course Description
This course focuses on the holistic nursing role in the community. The emphasis is on theoretical understanding of concepts related to community health nursing and public health nursing. These two concepts overlap, yet have distinguishing characteristics. The course will explore identifying health needs of the community and creating a health promotion education resource to address an identified need.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will apply the fundamentals of community and public health nursing by:
- differentiating between the concepts and characteristics of each term.
- examining the various aspects of public policy on global and public health.
- identifying the role of nursing in public health and community health.
- The student will distinguish the differences between global health, public health and community health nursing by:
- comparing and contrasting various types of data (population, morbidity/mortality, incidence/prevalence) within one community and among other communities.
- exploring the effects of multiple influences (environment, lifestyle, culture) on the health status of a community.
- appraising the impact of equity versus equality in the community.
- discussing the multifaceted global community and its various subpopulations.
- The student will analyze the health of a community by:
- prioritizing health related needs of a community.
- identifying resources available to meet the needs of a population aggregate including the health care delivery systems and under-served populations;
- reviewing existing community programs/initiatives to evaluate effectiveness based on their outcomes and measures.
- The student will demonstrate the differences between wellness, health promotion and disease prevention by:
- recognizing community resources that encourage wellness.
- choosing examples of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies as related to health interventions.
- creating a multidisciplinary health promotion focused teaching plan.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
