Course Description
Major topics include: functions and functional notation; domains and ranges of functions; graphs of functions and relations; operations on functions; inverse functions; linear, quadratic and rational functions; absolute value and radical functions; exponential and logarithmic properties, functions and equations; systems of equations and inequalities; applications such as curve fitting, modeling, optimization, exponential and logarithmic growth and decay. (Note: Credit is only given for MAC 1105 or MAC 1106.)
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will apply the fundamental concepts of algebra, and the characteristics and properties of relations and functions by:
- determining whether relations, equations, and graphs are functions.
- evaluating a function using function notation.
- determining the domain and/or range of given functions (polynomial, rational, absolute value, radical, exponential and logarithmic).
- performing arithmetic operations on given functions.
- performing the composition of given functions.
- simplifying and performing arithmetic operations on complex numbers, expressing the answer in standard form.
- evaluating and simplifying the difference quotient of given linear and quadratic functions.
- determining the inverse of given functions.
- The student will apply the properties of graphing functions and inequalities by:
- graphing standard linear, quadratic, cubic, rational, absolute value, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
- using transformations of the standard graphs to linear, quadratic, cubic, rational, absolute value, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
- graphing, given prescribed information, functions including linear (intercepts and y-intercept form), quadratic (vertex), and rational (asymptotic behavior), and piece-wise defined.
- graphing systems of linear and quadratic inequalities.
- The student will determine solution sets to a variety of equations and inequalities by:
- solving radical equations.
- solving absolute value equations.
- solving quadratic equations.
- solving higher order polynomial equations by factoring.
- solving polynomial and rational inequalities.
- solving exponential and logarithmic equations.
- solving systems of linear and quadratic equations in two variables using algebraic techniques.
- The student will apply problem-solving strategies by:
- solving application problems that require the use of linear equations and inequalities.
- solving application problems that require the use of quadratic equations.
- solving application problems that require the use of exponential equations (exponential growth and decay).
- solving application problems that require the use of systems of linear equations and inequalities.
Criteria Performance Standard
In order to earn a grade of C or better, the student will achieve at the 70% level or higher on classroom measures. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
