Course Description
This clinical practice allows the Health Information Management A.S. degree student to participate in health information management functions in either an acute care or other health care setting. Topics addressed include standard HIM department functions, billing and reimbursement, release of information, management, and supervision activities. The student will become familiar with and utilize various types of equipment, systems, and processes used in health information management departments.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will apply knowledge and skills related to the organization of health information management department operations, personnel, equipment and resources by:
- determining resources (equipment and supplies) to meet workload needs.
- following existing facility-wide policies and procedures for departmental functions.
- monitoring workflow and productivity within the department to identify gaps and overlaps and areas for improvement.
- maintaining quantity and quality of departmental work using established standards.
- identifying, selecting, and justifying department needs for purchasing or leasing equipment and resources.
- The student will apply knowledge and skills related to employee supervision by:
- monitoring staffing levels, turnaround time, productivity and workflow for supervisory purposes.
- describing and applying the leadership, direction and documentation necessary for supervision of personnel, such as hiring, performance appraisal, disciplinary action, etc.
- evaluating and/or revising job descriptions as needed.
- planning and implementing staff orientation and training programs.
- The student will explore the role and responsibilities of the health information technician as manager by:
- evaluating, developing and/or revising department policies and procedures.
- collaborating on development of strategic plans, goals, and objectives for areas of responsibility.
- attending and/or participating on facility-wide teams/committees responsible for health information service issues.
- providing consultation, education, and training to users of health information services.
- managing special projects.
- The student will apply knowledge and skills related to quality and performance improvement functions within the health information management department and facility-wide by:
- using quality improvement tools and techniques to improve departmental processes.
- monitoring workflow and productivity within the department to identify gaps and overlaps and areas for improvement.
- maintaining quantity and quality of departmental work using established standards.
- participating in facility-wide quality management program activities.
- The student will apply knowledge and skills required as entry-level competencies for Registered Health Information Technicians in the areas of health statistics, release of information, legal and regulatory requirements, billing and reimbursement, coding, patient privacy, and information technology by:
- collecting and retrieving data for quality management, utilization management, risk management, and other patient care related studies.
- calculating and interpreting descriptive healthcare statistics.
- presenting data in verbal and written forms.
- requesting patient-specific information from other sources.
- maintaining and enforcing patient health record confidentiality requirements.
- designing forms, computer input screens, and other health record documentation tools.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 78% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors.
