Course Description

This course provides an overview of healthcare informatics project management and introduces the concepts necessary to identify the major components that lead to the successful completion of an healthcare informatics project. Concepts include project planning; tracking and implementation; task delegation; time, money, and outcomes management of projects.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the definition and general principles of healthcare project management by:
    1. discussing the need for healthcare project management.
    2. defining the elements that constitute a project.
    3. explaining the primary factors related to project success and how to quantitatively and qualitatively measure and report objectives and outcomes.
    4. researching and reporting on case studies and examples of healthcare projects.
  2. The student will demonstrate skills associated with planning, executing, and tracking a healthcare project by:
    1. identifying stakeholder needs and expectations.
    2. determining functionality needs and analyzing systems requirements.
    3. identifying the roles and responsibilities of the project manager and project team.
    4. estimating cost, time, and effort requirements and creating a project schedule.
  3. The student will demonstrate abilities related to managing work teams, allocating project resources, and resolving problems associated with a healthcare project by:
    1. supervising work teams and communicating with the project members.
    2. resolving personnel and logistical issues and dealing with changes in the plan.
    3. establishing a budget and creating a resource management plan.
    4. setting up a quality management plan to safeguard patient safety.
    5. monitoring and reporting on the status of project objectives.
    6. managing resources and outcomes.
    7. preparing a project report.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 78% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
