Course Description
This course is a study of the components of developmentally appropriate curriculum. Students will evaluate learning environments, analyze classroom schedules and write age appropriate lesson plans for young children. (Note: This course requires 10 field experience hours in an early childhood setting.)
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will analyze general principles of developmentally appropriate practice by:
- defining the components of developmentally appropriate practice.
- examining the categories and social stages of play.
- comparing data related to developmentally appropriate methods of instruction for young children.
- The student will evaluate the role of curriculum for young children by:
- identifying indicators of developmentally appropriate curricula.
- summarizing curricula philosophies and models of instruction.
- identifying the key components of lesson plans and schedules designed for programs serving young children.
- creating appropriate classroom designs for early childhood and primary programs.
- The student will analyze developmentally appropriate practices for all developmental domains by:
- describing the developmental tasks of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
- assessing activities, materials/equipment, schedules and learning environments, for their appropriateness for each age group.
- The student will evaluate effective strategies for the involvement of families in programs serving young children by:
- summarizing the attitudes and behaviors that promote partnerships with families.
- developing strategies that include family members in the education of young children.
- The student will create learning activities from the skills and knowledge learned in the course by:
- formulating lessons for early childhood infant/toddler and preschool settings.
- preparing learning objectives.
- organizing lessons relevant to goals and standards.
- designing and implementing learning activities/experiences.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
