Course Description

The biological topics related to organisms and their environment are studied in detail. These topics include taxonomy, systematics, physiology, reproduction, ecology, and evolution.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will describe the process of evolution by:
    1. identifying major events in the history of life on earth.
    2. comparing and contrasting microevolution and macroevolution.
    3. explaining the different mechanisms of microevolution.
    4. explaining sympatric and allopatric theories of speciation.
    5. explaining the importance of developmental genes in the process of speciation.
    6. solving problems related to population genetics.
  2. The student will apply currently used systems of classification by:
    1. explaining the biological species concept.
    2. describing binomial nomenclature.
    3. distinguishing between taxonomy and systematics.
    4. identifying and interpreting the parts of a phylogenetic tree.
    5. building phylogenetic trees to separate groups of organisms.
  3. The student will distinguish between major taxa of living organisms by:
    1. listing the major identifying characteristics of these taxa.
    2. giving examples of organisms in each of these taxa.
    3. explaining the differences in their life cycle.
  4. The student will elaborate on the principles of ecology by:
    1. listing and describing the major biomes of earth.
    2. contrasting the terms: species, population, community and ecosystem.
    3. describing the different types of interactions within and among populations.
    4. explaining population dynamics.
    5. describing ecological succession in communities.
    6. describing the biochemical cycles and energy flow through ecosystems.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
