Course Description
This course focuses on the nurse’s role in managing the holistic health care of individuals and families with bio-psychosocial disruptions. Emphasis is on the nursing process and principles from nursing, physical and behavioral sciences. The course is intended to develop and enhance knowledge necessary for the promotion of client/family well-being throughout the life span.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will examine theories and concepts of interrelated behavioral and nursing science to determine the holistic health needs of families by:
- comparing and contrasting the interrelated theoretical concepts and theories of family;
- exploring individual and family needs based on developmental stages across the life span;
- differentiating among nursing diagnoses applicable within a variety of settings to address family strengths and weaknesses; and
- examining family wellness strategies applicable in a variety of settings.
- The student will construct a holistic teaching plan for a select family after:
- gathering significant subjective and objective assessment data for the family;
- prioritizing healthcare needs with consideration for acute and chronic illness;
- developing intervention strategies supported by evidence based concepts of holistic family care;
- incorporating individualized wellness strategies and community resources; and
- designing measurable, objective evaluation methods.
- The student will be able to recognize nurses’ legal and professional responsibilities related to violence and abuse by:
- examining the legal and professional responsibilities for reporting abuse; and
- assessing the possible incident of violence and/ or abuse.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
