Course Description
This course focuses on client assessment, health risks and formation of nursing diagnoses and health teaching. Emphasis is on the process of client interaction and use of appraisal skills in the collection of bio-psychosocial data across the life span.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will incorporate health assessment concepts to obtain comprehensive client health data by:
- Identifying principles of growth and development and age-specific norms.
- Describing modifications to health assessment based on client factors.
- Discussing ethical-legal dimensions related to health information.
- Using appropriate communication techniques.
- Recording health history and physical assessment data accurately and in an organized format.
- The student will be able to evaluate a comprehensive health history by:
- Collecting physical, psychosocial, cultural, growth and development, and genetic/genomic data.
- Using appropriate tools for data collection.
- Describing alterations in health and health risks based on the data.
- Using the health history to guide the physical assessment.
- The student will be able to perform a comprehensive physical assessment on selected clients by:
- Using appropriate physical assessment techniques in a systematic manner.
- Differentiating normal from abnormal findings.
- Correlating health history data to physical assessment findings.
- Analyzing physical assessment findings in relation to actual or potential health problems.
- The student will be able to distinguish priority areas for health promotion and prevention by:
- Determining health risks and teaching needs based on health assessment findings.
- Explaining appropriate teaching interventions for clients with actual or potential health problems.
- Describing interprofessional collaboration efforts needed to address health needs.
- The student will be able to design holistic and evidence-based nursing care by:
- Developing a nursing care plan based on health assessment findings related to actual and potential problems.
- Applying evidence-based nursing interventions.
- Incorporating cultural and ethical dimensions into care.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
