Course Description
This course will introduce the student to tasks expected of a technician working at a veterinary practice where behavior cases are evaluated. Tasks to include: phone triage, collecting behavioral history, implementing a behavior plan and follow up calls and visits. Animal learning and communication of dogs and cats will be covered as well as basic psychopharmacology. Student projects will include keeping a log of observed animal behavior and designing a behavioral education program.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will apply concepts in learning theory by:
- reading the required material including the texts and research articles.
- discussing the principles of learning theory with the instructor and other students.
- developing an education tool for clients or fellow veterinary staff members regarding animal behavior.
- The student will learn how dogs and cats communicate by:
- reading the required material including the texts and research articles.
- discussing animal communication with the instructor and other students.
- observing and recording an animal’s communication.
- The student will develop the skills necessary to observe common animal behaviors by:
- reading the required material including the texts and research articles.
- discussing observation and recording techniques with the instructor and other students.
- observing and recording an animal’s behavior.
- The student will develop the necessary skills to assist the veterinarian(s) in implementing the behavior protocol at a veterinary hospital by:
- reading the required material including the texts and research articles.
- discussing the tasks necessary for implementing behavior protocols with the instructor and other students.
- developing an education tool for clients or fellow veterinary staff members regarding animal behavior.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
