Course Description
This course will focus on the medical and surgical knowledge and skills necessary to function as an effective veterinary technician caring for equine and bovine patients. Topics covered will include diseases, nursing care, surgery, nutrition, and pain management.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the common diseases of horses and cattle by:
- recognizing the clinical signs associated with these diseases.
- defining the physiological changes associated with these diseases.
- discussing the principles of the treatment protocols for these diseases.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the common surgical procedures performed on horses and cattle by:
- recognizing the circumstances that would necessitate these surgical procedures.
- determining the proper role of a veterinary technician in these surgical procedures.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the common nursing techniques used for horses and cattle by:
- recognizing the conditions requiring nursing care.
- choosing appropriate nursing procedures based on the condition of the patient.
- analyzing the success or failure of nursing procedures.
- modifying the nursing care plan as the condition of the patient changes.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the nutritional requirements for cattle and horses by:
- identifying the nutritional requirements for neonatal, geriatric, obstetric, critical care, post-surgical, and diseased patients
- choosing a diet plan for these patients.
- analyzing the success or failure of the diet plan for these patients.
- modifying the diet plan as the condition of the patient changes.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the recognition and control of pain for horses and cattle by:
- recognizing the signs of pain in horses and cattle.
- analyzing the methods, procedures, and medications available to control pain in horses and cattle.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the medical equipment used during the provision of veterinary medical care for horses and cattle by:
- identifying and discussing the proper use of equipment commonly used in equine and bovine medicine.
- properly using equipment commonly used in equine and bovine medicine, when available.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
