Course Description
This course will focus on learning and applying techniques in preventive care, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics and dental radiology appropriate for veterinary technicians. The student will acquire knowledge of dental diseases, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic technique and equipment.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic dental anatomy and terminology of dogs and cats by:
- recognizing and charting normal anatomy of the oral cavity of dogs.
- recognizing and charting normal anatomy of the oral cavity of cats.
- identifying the four types of teeth.
- identifying the anatomy of a tooth.
- applying clinical dental terminology to actual cases.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic anatomy and pathophysiology of periodontal disease by:
- identifying normal periodontal anatomy.
- identifying periodontal pathology.
- using the periodontal probe to achieve probing depths in dogs and cats and chart abnormal findings.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic anatomy and pathophysiology of endodontic disease by:
- identifying normal endodontic anatomy.
- identifying periodontal pathology.
- charting abnormal findings.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of orthodontic disease including breed normals by:
- identifying normal orthodontic anatomy in the dog and cat including different head types.
- identifying orthodontic pathology.
- charting abnormal findings.
- The student will acquire knowledge of dental equipment use and maintenance by:
- identifying different dental hand instruments, and motorized scalers.
- maintaining the above instruments including sharpening hand instruments and following a routine instrument maintenance program.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of dental materials by:
- recognizing dental materials used in dentistry.
- understanding the use of common dental materials.
- preparing dental materials for use by the veterinarian.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of veterinary dental radiology equipment and techniques by:
- understanding when dental x-rays are indicated in veterinary dentistry.
- positioning the animal and intraoral dental film for full mouth x-ray studies in dogs and cats.
- processing dental films.
- identifying the films with regards to individual teeth, arch, as well as the patient.
- storing the films for future retrieval.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
