Course Description
This course will focus on human-companion animal interactions. Students will relate to animal-assisted therapy/activity, care and uses of service animals and humane education programs.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will describe the influence of companion animals on human development throughout the life cycle by:
- summarizing the history of pet keeping.
- discussing the effects of animal contact on human wellbeing.
- examining theories of social support and attachment .
- The student will develop skills for participation in community human-animal therapy and education programs by:
- identifying appropriate animals.
- developing a plan for program animal selection, care, and monitoring.
- observing human-animal interactions at a community site.
- The student will describe service animal programs for human physical, sensory and emotional needs by:
- recognizing the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- identifying issues of species selection and training.
- discussing service animal welfare issues.
- The student will examine community resource for humane education, animal rescue shelter and rehabilitation by:
- compiling a list of local animal support programs and their functions.
- developing verbal and written skills for animal resource information and referral.
- The student will employ positive communication skills concerning pet loss and human grief by:
- recognizing human responses to animal loss.
- providing grief support.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
