Course Description
This course presents the various components of human communication and the communication process. Topics include perception, critical listening and thinking, verbal and nonverbal communication, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, and gender communication. Students will compose and analyze messages that adapt to different audiences and will construct effective presentations for face-to-face and multi-media environments. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements as outlined in General Education Requirements. Credit is only given for one of the following: SPC 1017 or SPC 1017H. Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate competence in perception, listening skills, and critical thinking skills by:
- identifying the components of the communication process and the perception process
- critically evaluating self-perception by activities and written reflection
- constructing outlines that logically distinguish the intended topic, thesis, and appropriate supporting points
- monitoring listening skills through activities or written reflection
- The student will apply the principles of verbal and nonverbal communication by:
- identifying effective use of nonverbal and verbal communication skills in activities and presentations
- using nonverbal behavior which supports the verbal message with eye contact and appropriate posture, gestures, facial expressions and body movements
- The student will demonstrate intercultural communication as it adapts to the global environment by:
- recognizing perception variations in relation to values, gender, and ethnicity through activities and oral and written assignments
- identifying the principles of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination through activities and oral and written assignments
- The student will adapt to various audiences in public speaking and other forms of communication by:
- analyzing a prospective audience by gathering demographic data including, but not limited to, age, gender, socioeconomic status, and ethnic background
- designing appropriate oral and written messages suitable to the audience
- The student will research, construct, and deliver effective presentations or interviews for face-to-face and multi-media environments by:
- identifying and applying topic selection and research skills
- constructing various types of outlines
- demonstrating competency in effective delivery skills for face-to-face and online audiences using presentation tools and electronic mediums
- controlling communication apprehension
- analyzing the role of values, beliefs, and attitudes in communication situations
- The student will demonstrate effective interpersonal communication by:
- planning and applying the basic human communication skills necessary for effective interpersonal communication in various scenarios
- identifying and applying various conflict resolution techniques
- The student will demonstrate writing skills by:
- planning and composing various written assignments including, but not limited to, speech outlines, critiques, essays, reflection and reaction papers about various topics using Standard American English
- The student will demonstrate small group communication by:
- identifying the dynamics of group behavior based on the importance of collaborating in both the academic community and the workplace
- effectively solving problems and managing conflict in groups while acknowledging the role of leadership and team building skills in reaching consensus
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will, with minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors.
This course partially satisfies the writing requirements as outlined in the General Education requirements.
