Course Description

This course is an introduction to management and leadership principles, with an emphasis on health information professionals. The goal of this course is to provide a foundation for sound management practice and decision-making for HIM professionals in today’s healthcare environment.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will exhibit leadership in health information management (HIM) by:
    1. describing traditional theories of leadership.
    2. articulating key functions and skills of traditional leadership theories.
    3. comparing and contrasting traditional theories of leadership within healthcare organizations.
    4. examining how cultural diversity impacts the HIM workforce.
  2. The student will demonstrate concepts of management and supervision principles related to the operation of a Health Information Management Department by:
    1. developing strategic plans, goals, and objectives for a health information department.
    2. developing policies and procedures for a health information management department.
    3. discussing ethical concerns regarding HIM management.
    4. explaining HIM fiscal responsibilities in relation to budgeting.
    5. identifying types of budgets including – statistics budget, operating budgets, master budgets, flexible budgets, and zero-based budgets.
  3. The student will weigh the role of human resources administration within the health information management department by:
    1. writing job descriptions.
    2. applying departmental personnel policies.
    3. discussing methods of employee recruitment, hiring practices, motivation, performance evaluations, and disciplinary action.
    4. evaluating retention strategies in terms of effectiveness in retaining employees.
  4. The student will develop the ability to prepare and deliver inservice training for employees within the Health Information Management Department by:
    1. implementing a staff orientation and training program.
    2. evaluating the effectiveness of training.
    3. evaluate the impact of HIM employee training on performance appraisals.
    4. justifying additional training needs based on emerging roles in HIM.
  5. The student will validate legal aspects of healthcare management:
    1. discussing federal equal employment opportunity legislation.
    2. describing key components of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    3. evaluating legal practices in relation to interviewing and hiring practices.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 78% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
