Course Description
This course will examine the responsibilities of the funeral director from the first call until the last service rendered to the family. The course will cover various religions, fraternal, military, secular, and traditional funeral customs. The funeral director's role as a counselor is emphasized.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will outline the funeral director's role as a counselor for funeral services by:
- explaining the differences between counseling and therapy.
- stating the basic skills and techniques used in counseling and apply them to funeral service.
- identifying the elements that a funeral director brings into a counseling session.
- describing the requirements of funeral service counseling.
- locating resources in the community that provide counseling.
- stating resources for coping with his/her own personal experiences with loss situations.
- identifying ways in which funeral directors facilitate aspects of grief.
- demonstrating counseling skills in role play situations.
- The student will examine the functions of a funeral director from first call to last service rendered to the family by:
- identifying proper procedures for notification of death, removal, and preparation for arrangement conference.
- listing items usually included in the arrangement conference.
- listing items of information that are necessary to complete during the arrangement conference.
- listing the items that are commonly used to meet the family needs for a funeral service.
- identifying the differences used in arranging at-need from pre-need.
- identifying and explaining the necessary forms and legal documents associated with making funeral arrangements.
- explaining the related professions that are used in arranging a funeral service.
- explaining the professional and ethical practices of a funeral director.
- demonstrating knowledge of procedures and skills by making funeral arrangements through role playing situations.
- The student will recognize the various religious, fraternal, military, and non-traditional funeral rites and ceremonies by:
- explaining the traditional and non-traditional funeral rite.
- explaining the procedure for conducting funerals for:
- Protestant (non-Roman Catholic)
- Roman Catholic
- Orthodox and Reform Jewish
- Greek Orthodox
- Christian Science
- Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
- Others
- defining the terminology of specific religions listed above.
- identifying the contact person of a specific fraternal organization to coordinate participations in funeral ceremony.
- explaining the American Legion funeral rite.
- explaining the military funeral rite.
- stating the requirements for eligibility for veteran's benefits.
- explaining how to present options for a non-traditional funeral rite.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
