Course Description
This course will focus on learning and applying emergency and critical care techniques appropriate for veterinary technicians. The student will acquire knowledge of the proper use of drugs, fluids, and equipment for emergency and critical care patients. Students will also learn to evaluate and monitor these patients.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic emergency and critical care terminology of dogs and cats by recognizing terms and definitions associated with emergency and critical care.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge to recognize emergency conditions associated with the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine, reproductive, urinary, ocular, and nervous systems by evaluating case presentations and/or live animals reflecting physical characteristics associated with emergency conditions in each of the indicated body systems.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge to recognize emergency conditions associated with anesthesia by evaluating case presentations and/or live animals undergoing anesthesia.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic anatomy and pathophysiology of shock by evaluating case presentations and/or live animals in cases where shock is a potential condition the animal may experience
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the proper use and placement of intravenous catheters by placing catheters in peripheral and jugular veins of live animals and/or cadavers.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the different fluid types available and the appropriate uses for each by evaluating cases and/or live animals and recommending a choice of fluid and appropriate rate(s) of administration based on their evaluation of the patient presented.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures, drugs, and fluids by evaluating cases and/or live animals and describing and/or performing proper CPR procedures. Appropriate drugs with their doses and fluids and their rates of administration would also be determined for these patients.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the assessment and treatment of animal pain by developing a pain score chart reflecting the physical and physiological manifestations of the different levels of pain and describing the advantages and disadvantages of using narcotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to treat pain.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of nutrition and nursing care for emergency and critical care patients by evaluating case presentations and/or live animals and developing plans for their care that include nutrition, physical therapy, special equipment, and any other care deemed appropriate.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
