Course Description
This course is designed to provide the student with an introduction to educational concepts and theory relative to effective communication in many veterinary settings. Topics included are development and design of training materials, designing goals and objectives for training materials, client instruction, principles of learning, learning styles and motivation, case-based learning, and using media and software. Emphasis will be on presenting the basic concepts of planning, development and evaluation of presentations and materials.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will function as a professional healthcare educator in a variety of settings by:
- identifying instructional skills, strategies and attitudes that promote academic achievement.
- creating an environment for learning in the laboratory, clinic and classroom that enhances rapport and communication with learners.
- providing appropriate feedback and evaluation on learner progress and achievement.
- respecting diverse talents and ways of learning in a diverse population of learners.
- evaluating professional literature and research relating to the veterinary technology educator.
- completing a personal reflection assessment in specified teaching skills and strategies that enhance student learning and achievement.
- The student will affirm the basic educational concepts and techniques for effective teaching and evaluating in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical environment by:
- discussing current theories and principles of teaching and learning.
- evaluating a syllabus and course outline for content and relevance in a given area of study.
- stating behavior objectives for teaching and learning in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
- describing Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives and its application in learning and evaluation.
- relating objectives to instructional planning and evaluation.
- evaluating a wide variety of traditional and emerging models and styles of teaching and learning including case-based instruction and evaluation.
- identifying key principles in best practices of assessment, grading and evaluation.
- constructing methods of assessment and evaluation that will assist in development of the learner.
- The student will identify personal and professional values and skills that contribute to effective teaching and learning with diverse populations by:
- describing techniques and strategies which promote enhanced critical, creative and evaluative thinking capacities of academically diverse learners.
- listing academic accommodations for learners with disabilities.
- discussing diversity and complexity with considerations of race, ethnicity and gender.
- evaluating current theories on teaching academically diverse learners.
- describing the computer and educational technology aids that enhance and assist learning.
- discussing the relationship of various learning theories to motivation.
- The student will provide clear, planned professional presentations, based on current information and best practice standards by:
- discussing strategies to actively engage the learner in a variety of settings.
- identifying strategies that enhance interaction and discussion in the learning process.
- discussing strategies in creating a positive learning environment in the classroom, laboratory or clinical setting.
- analyzing alternatives and supplements to lecturing that involve and engage the learner.
- utilizing current technologies in the delivery of presentations.
- preparing a topic of instruction to be researched for current information and delivered in an appropriate format.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
