Course Description
This course will focus on anesthesia and surgical procedures associated with providing anesthesia and surgical services to veterinary patients, including anesthetic, pre-surgical, surgical, and post-surgical procedures.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of anesthetic drugs, anesthetic procedures, and duties of a veterinary anesthesia technician by:
- assessing the pre-surgical condition of the patient.
- choosing the appropriate anesthetic drugs based on the patient assessment.
- differentiating the mechanisms of action of anesthetic drugs.
- choosing appropriate techniques to administer anesthetic drugs.
- assessing patient reaction to the administration of anesthetic drugs.
- identifying patient parameters to be monitored during anesthesia.
- choosing appropriate responses to changes in the anesthetic status of the patient.
- identifying patient parameters to monitor during the recovery phase of anesthesia.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of pre-surgical nursing procedures and duties of a veterinary surgical technician by:
- evaluating the pre-surgical evaluation of surgical patients.
- discovering normal and abnormal conditions of potential surgical patients.
- choosing appropriate surgical instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.
- developing pre-surgical preparation plans for surgical patients.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of surgical nursing procedures and duties of a veterinary surgical technician by:
- identifying the duties of the sterile surgical technician for common surgical procedures.
- identifying the duties of the non-sterile surgical technician for common surgical procedures.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of post-surgical nursing procedures and duties of a veterinary surgical technician by:
- identifying the potential post-operative complications associated with surgical procedures.
- assessing the post-operative condition and recovery of surgical patients.
- proposing appropriate post-operative care of surgical instruments and equipment.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
