Course Description
This course will focus on the nursing care required by companion animals as the result of disease or neonatal, geriatric, and obstetrical needs.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the common diseases of companion animals and the nursing procedures and duties of a veterinary technician associated with those diseases by:
- specifying the clinical signs associated with those diseases.
- relating the physiologic changes within the animal’s body resulting in those clinical signs.
- choosing appropriate nursing techniques to assist in the treatment of those diseases.
- evaluating the effectiveness of the chosen nursing techniques.
- modifying the initial nursing plan based on the response of the patient to that plan.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the nursing procedures and duties of a veterinary technician associated with providing care to neonatal companion animals by:
- assessing the special needs of neonatal patients.
- choosing appropriate nursing techniques to assist in the treatment of neonatal patients.
- evaluating the effectiveness of the chosen nursing techniques.
- modifying the initial nursing plan based on the response of the neonatal patient to that plan.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the nursing procedures and duties of a veterinary technician associated with providing care to geriatric companion animals by:
- assessing the special needs of geriatric patients.
- choosing appropriate nursing techniques to assist in the treatment of geriatric patients.
- evaluating the effectiveness of the chosen nursing techniques.
- modifying the initial nursing plan based on the response of the geriatric patient to that plan.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the nursing procedures and duties of a veterinary technician associated with providing obstetrical care to companion animals by:
- categorizing the developmental stages of the fetus during gestation.
- describing the physiologic changes that occur in a pregnant animal.
- assessing the clinical signs associated with dystocia.
- choosing appropriate nursing techniques to assist in the treatment of obstetric patients.
- evaluating the effectiveness of the chosen nursing techniques.
- modifying the initial nursing plan based on the response of the obstetric patient to that plan.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
