Course Description
This course is an introduction to healthcare compliance.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will identify the components of an effective compliance program by:
- Summarizing the major functions of the compliance officer.
- Differentiating the individual components of a compliance program.
- Listing the enforcement agencies that oversee HIM compliance.
- The student will use case scenarios to demonstrate consent and documentation requirements by:
- Critiquing the common illegal practices for HIM reporting and the impact PQRI has on physicians’ offices.
- Performing qualitative analysis of documentation with the health records to evaluate compliance.
- Classifying the essential components of a written consent and quality documentation.
- The student will evaluate facility-wide adherence to health information services’ compliance by:
- Comparing and contrasting various types of audits.
- Conducting qualitative analysis to ensure documentation in sample health records supports the diagnosis, reflects progress, clinical findings, and discharge status.
- Identifying the various levels of disciplinary action for non-compliance.
- Identifying compliance of regulatory requirements including coding guidelines, compliance policies, as well as federal and state laws.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 78% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors.
