Course Description
This course allows the student to perform medical coding functions in a professional practice setting using either a simulated or an actual health information management environment. Students will apply knowledge and skills for coding patient records using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding systems.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will analyze the case studies content and use the health care documentation in the case studies to accurately code medical conditions, diseases and procedures by:
- performing record analysis to assure that documentation in the health record supports the diagnosis and reflects the progress, clinical findings and discharge status of the patient.
- abstracting records for department indices, databases, and/or registries.
- requesting patient-specific information from other sources that may be necessary to accurately code patient records.
- complying with procedural requirements of the facility and regulations and standards related to coding guidelines.
- The student will demonstrate previous acquired knowledge and skills of clinical classification reimbursement methodologies by:
- assigning diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD and CPT and other recognized coding systems utilized by the facility.
- validating coding accuracy using clinical information found in the case study.
- validating reimbursement classification system assignments, such as Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) and/or Ambulatory Patient Classification (APCs) as applicable.
- assisting in coding activities that facilitate the facility’s billing process, as indicated.
- The student will demonstrate entry-level competencies required of a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) by:
- protecting data integrity and validity by using coding guidelines and ethical coding standards.
- querying facility-wide databases to retrieve information needed to accurately code patient records.
- communicating effectively with various providers and disciplines throughout the continuum of health care services.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 78% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors.
