Course Description

This is a practical and applied course designed to meet the needs of the professional community. The course will apply the various components of human communication and communication processes in a professional setting. Topics will include: public speaking, interviewing, leadership skills, conflict management, listening, nonverbal communication, and small group communication. Students will compose and analyze messages that adapt to different audiences and construct effective presentations for face-to-face and multi-media environments. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements as outlined in the General Education Requirements.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will apply the principles or verbal communication and nonverbal communication by:
    1. identifying effective use of nonverbal and verbal communication skills in activities and presentations.
    2. recognizing gender use in oral presentations and written assignment.
    3. identifying and acknowledging various cultural differences in nonverbal communication by watching nonverbal communication videos of various cultures and/or participating in class activities.
    4. using a variety of appropriate audiovisual materials.
  2. The student will identify the importance of listening skills in an applied and professional setting by:
    1. describing and analyzing their own listening skills.
    2. watching and observing various communication situations in a professional setting.
  3. The student will observe and participate in various small group situations (i.e. meetings and collaborative environments) by:
    1. solving situational problems effectively and applying conflict management skills in groups.
    2. preparing and organizing agendas for various kinds of group work.
    3. identifying the dynamics of group behavior and the importance of working together.
  4. The student will demonstrate effective interviewing techniques by:
    1. planning and executing an informational gathering interview.
    2. researching and practicing the skills necessary for a successful career interview.
  5. The student will research, construct, and deliver effective presentations for face-to-face and multimedia environments by:
    1. organizing and planning various written assignments including but not limited to outlines, critiques, essays, reaction and analysis papers about various professional communication topics using standard American English.
    2. choosing appropriate supporting materials in the construction of a professional presentation.
    3. respecting the legal considerations involved in public discourse.
  6. The student will demonstrate ability to write by:
    1. planning, organizing and drafting various written assignments.
  7. The student will identify the ethical considerations involved in a professional setting by:
    1. analyzing and reacting to professional case studies.
    2. analyzing and reacting to current events.
  8. The student will examine and identify the communication skills necessary for effective leadership by:
    1. analyzing and evaluating their own leadership skills.
    2. analyzing and evaluating the leadership skills of leaders and managers in a professional setting.

Criteria Performance Standard

Criteria for Evaluation of Writing: The student will exhibit on his/her writing the characteristics of at least Level 3 (Practice Writing) in the College Level Academic Skills Progress (CLASP) Descriptions of Essay Ratings. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will, with minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors.
