Course Description
This clinical practice allows the student to experience and practice generic health information management department functions in a simulated health information management environment. Topics addressed include typical workflow patterns; admission/registration processes; record analysis; management of standard health record documents; record filing and numbering systems; retention and retrieval procedures; and electronic health record (EHR) activities. The student will utilize various types of equipment and software representative of a health information management department.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will examine the role of a health information professional by:
- describing types of care provided in various healthcare settings.
- explaining regulatory and accreditation standards that apply to various healthcare settings.
- describing reimbursement methods for various healthcare settings.
- identifying coding and classification systems used in various healthcare settings.
- defining roles of the health information management professional in various healthcare settings.
- The student will demonstrate the correct use of Vista's virtual lab system by:
- creating an office note, a problem list, consultation, and a discharge summary.
- ordering an outpatient lab and medications.
- managing alerts, triggers, and restricted records.
- maintaining clinical and health reporting.
- coding an office visit.
- The student will demonstrate the correct use of Meditech's virtual lab system by:
- assessing and logging into accounts.
- releasing information.
- managing the deficiency process and related reports.
- navigating through patient care services and revenue cycle management processes.
- The student will demonstrate the correct use of DrChrono's virtual lab system by:
- conducting enterprise master patient index (EMPI) operations.
- registering a patient.
- conducting functions of entity match and resolution.
- The student will demonstrate the correct use of CIOX's virtual lab system by:
- tracking release of information requests.
- evaluating release of information requests.
- processing release of information requests.
- The student will demonstrate the correct use of EDCO's virtual lab system by:
- navigating the EDMS Scavenger hunt.
- abstracting data.
- redacting protected health information.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 78% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors.
