Course Description
This course examines the origin and development of painting, sculpture, architecture, and significant crafts from the Paleolithic era to the Gothic period in Western Europe. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- Students will explain the conventional classification terminology of art history by:
- differentiating the major periods of human history from the Paleolithic through Gothic eras.
- summarizing the conventional components and characteristics of aesthetic artistic styles.
- Students will apply diverse modes of art historical analysis by:
- interpreting the formal (aesthetic) characteristics of visual material.
- defending a comparison of aesthetic artistic styles.
- hypothesizing the aesthetic art objective and/or the relationship between visual forms and their time and place of origin.
- writing a critical report on artworks or exhibits in an art museum, gallery, or other cultural venue.
- Students will interpret selected works of Western art from the Paleolithic through Gothic eras by:
- assigning the correct major chronological period, period or cultural style, and specific dates for selected artworks.
- evaluating the origin, development, and influence of selected artistic styles.
- defending a comparison of the aesthetic, period, or cultural styles of selected artworks.
- evaluating the use of iconographic or symbolic representation in selected artworks.
- justifying the determination of an aesthetic art objective of a particular period style, cultural style, or artwork.
- Students will compose effective, argument-driven interpretations of visual material by:
- analyzing the visual (aesthetic) nature of an artwork or set of artworks.
- evaluating the contextual nature of an artwork or set of artworks.
- documenting a visit to an art museum, gallery, or other cultural venue via an expository, evaluative, persuasive, or personal response.
