Course Description

This course exposes the student to the forensic value, handling, preservation, testing and documentation of biological evidence. This course also addresses safety issues involved in handling biological evidence.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate safe and proper methods of handling biological evidence by:
    1. identifying biological hazards, including:
      1. body fluids and body fluid stains
      2. infectious diseases
      3. decomposed flesh
      4. deceased casework related to bodies at crime scenes
  2. The student will illustrate the collection methods of biological evidence by:
    1. processing a mock crime scene.
    2. packaging and preserving crime scene biological evidence.
  3. The student will explain autopsy evidence collection by:
    1. preparing a report by visiting the medical examiner's office to view an autopsy, crime related autopsy if possible.
    2. identifying appropriate exemplars to be recovered from autopsy.
  4. The student will classify the testing of biological evidence by:
    1. conducting presumptive tests.
    2. interpreting results of presumptive tests and confirmatory test.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70 percent accuracy, demonstrate achievement of the above objectives through: 1. Multiple-choice objective and short answer essay tests. 2. Mock crime scene exercises. 3. Practical exams idenifying biological fluid stains on mock evidence samples
