Course Description
This course will focus on the development of advanced American Sign Language (ASL) skills utilized in educational settings including idiomatic and multi-meaning ASL/English vocabulary, syntactic structures, and depicting verbs utilized in K-12 and post-secondary educational contexts.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The students will analyze educational terminology used in K-12 and post-secondary educational contexts by:
- Identifying terminology that impacts language modalities and developmental levels used in various school settings and subjects.
- Comparing and contrasting conceptually accurate signs used for specialized terminology
- Examining the accuracy of English/American Sign Language (ASL) sign choices that reflect content and whether they are appropriate equivalents in meaning.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of sign choices based on the content of the material presented.
- The students will demonstrate proficiency using language with multiple meanings in both ASL and English by:
- Identifying the meaning of terms presented and equivalents for those terms in both English and ASL.
- Comparing alternative signs, synonyms and semantic structures to express equivalents.
- Analyzing critical thinking skills in translating/interpreting syntactically accurate idioms and syntax in various linguistic registers.
- Evaluating the potential impact on comprehension of the expressed interpretations used with figurative, idiomatic and multi-meaning words in English and ASL.
- The students will be able to discuss the functions of ASL depicting verbs and blends (classifiers) in educational contexts by:
- Identifying the meaning in complex grammar, based on facial expression, depicting verbs, and blends (classifiers).
- Comparing and contrasting the expansion of various depicting verbs and blends in relation to the principles of usage in various educational contexts.
- Analyzing and applying types of conjunctive devices and transitions markers used in interpretation.
- Evaluating the cohesion of the ASL conjunctive devices and transition markers used to represent English with ASL equivalents
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate a minimum of 70% accuracy of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
