Course Description
This course reinforces the principles of transliterating from the source language of English to the target language of codes of English in K-12 educational settings. Activities will be reinforced through drill, practice, role play demonstration, and video and audio taped materials in K-12 educational settings. The student will learn the techniques of self-assessment through media produced assessment and class discussion/analysis.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will accurately transliterate spoken information into a Manual English Code by:
- analyzing the use of transliteration skills as performed in taped or live voice materials with a timed rate of 100 words per minute.
- performing from taped or live voice materials.
- The student will apply the principles of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics to a variety of transliterating situations by:
- demonstrating professional judgment in problem-solving related to the application of the interpreting code of ethics.
- identifying basic principles of the application of the interpreting code of ethics through written testing.
- The student will use fingerspelling and Signed English vocabulary in transliteration by:
- demonstrating clarity and fluency in fingerspelling and Signed English Vocabulary via live application and via media produced materials.
- The student will create and use conceptually accurate technical signs for transliterating situations in which they are appropriate in the K-12 educational by:
- explaining the principles of conceptually accurate interpreting and transliterating.
- applying vocabulary in live and media produced materials.
- The student will adjust transliterating register from ASL to Manual Coded English, including Pidgin Signed English in K-12 educational settings by:
- defining the concepts of ASL, Manually Coded English, and Pidgin Signed English.
- analyzing the concept of interpreting register.
- improving media-produced materials to adjust register where shifts are required from interpreting in K-12 educational settings.
- The student will continue to incorporate appropriate facial expression, body language, and gesture in K-12 educational settings by:
- demonstrating non-manual signals in transliterating performance.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through measures developed by individual course instructors.
