Course Description
This course is a continuation of English-to-American Sign language interpreting skills designed to focus on the advancement of consecutive interpretation techniques in a variety of role-playing situations and settings.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will analyze key principles of the cognitive process in consecutive interpreting by:
- Comparing the cognitive processes involved in various contexts within the interpreting process.
- Discussing the importance of memory to the interpreting process, and identifying strategies for improving memory skills.
- Applying memory techniques and discourse analysis to the consecutive interpretation of a text in both ASL and English.
- The student will demonstrate using consecutive interpreting in various situations by:
- Identifying different models and types of interpreting and applying their skills in interpreting consecutively from English into ASL.
- Analyzing ASL and English equivalent in consecutive interpretation with in various contexts and situations.
- Producing a culturally appropriate interpretation in different scenarios.
- Evaluating the ability to effectively team interpret during consecutive interpretation, including Deaf-Hearing team interpreting.
- The student will analyze the demands-control schema of working interpreters in a variety of community and educational settings.
- Recognizing and explaining the dynamic nature of demands.
- Identifying interpreting decisions that are affected by the priority and significance of demands.
- Comparing the various challenges and risks involved in the consecutive interpreting process and in Deaf-Hearing team interpreting.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
