Course Description
This is an advanced course in both English-to-American Sign language and American Sign Language-to-English interpreting skills. Students will focus on the advancement of their simultaneous interpretation techniques, with speed and accuracy in their expressive interpreting skills and in a complex variety of situations and settings.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will analyze key principles of the cognitive process in simultaneous interpretation by:
- comparing the cognitive process of various contexts with the interpreting process.
- discussing the importance of the interpreting process, and identifying strategies for improving speed and accuracy.
- applying discourse analysis techniques to the simultaneous interpretation in both American Sign Language and English.
- applying their skills in interpreting simultaneously both English into American Sign Language and American Sign language into English.
- The student will demonstrate using simultaneous interpreting in a variety of community and educational settings by:
- contrasting different models and types of interpreting.
- producing a culturally appropriate interpretation in educational settings.
- evaluating the ability to effectively team interpret during simultaneous interpretation, including team of deaf and hearing interpreters in various community settings.
- The student will evaluate simultaneous interpretation in various settings by:
- analyzing equivalent in simultaneous interpretation with various contexts and situations through peer evaluation and self-analysis.
- identifying challenges of linguistic decisions that are affected during simultaneous interpreting in a variety of settings.
- comparing the various challenges and risks involved in the simultaneous interpreting process.
- critiquing deaf and hearing interpreters in a variety of interpreting situations.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
