Course Description
This course will provide the student with the opportunity to explore crime theories, crime causation, crime in the modern world, and future trends of criminology and delinquency. In addition, the student will examine theory versus reality throughout the course.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain the theories behind criminology, crime and deviance by:
- differentiating between criminal and deviant acts.
- defining the theory versus reality of crime and delinquency.
- The student will analyze the causes of crime by:
- comparing the various theories of juvenile crime causation.
- explaining the evolution of juvenile criminality.
- identifying the issues involved in the types of biological theories.
- explaining the psychological theories of criminal behavior.
- The student will explain the sociological theories related to crime causation by:
- describing the societal issues that contribute to criminality.
- interpreting the social process theories and social development issues which are reflected in criminology and delinquency.
- describing the power of conflict within society as reflected in the social conflict theories.
- The student will illustrate crime in the modern world by:
- identifying the link between drugs, juvenile crime and delinquency.
- explaining the interrelationship between technology and crime.
- describing future trends and concerns of juvenile delinquency and crime.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
