Course Description
The Event Industry is an introductory course designed to familiarize students with an overview of the meeting, incentive, convention, and exhibition (MICE) industry. The course explores the various roles of businesses and careers associated with the event industry.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will investigate the history, present state, and future of the event industry by:
- discussing the major historical trends of the meeting industry.
- defining basic event subfields.
- differentiating between types of meetings.
- identifying the venues associated with meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions.
- explaining the role of tourism and hospitality sectors within the event industry.
- outlining the economic impact of the events industry.
- The student will explore the types of careers involved in the events industry by:
- identifying the responsibilities of event planners.
- explaining the role of general service contractors, destination marketing organizations, destination management companies, meeting planners, and event planners within the industry.
- The student will examine how meeting planners design, manage, and conduct a meeting by:
- explaining scouting missions.
- identifying the key elements in the meeting planning process.
- identifying target markets for specific types of events.
- listing the costs associated with a meeting.
- discussing the role of transportation in meeting management.
- describing food and beverage options for events.
- identifying technologies that support meeting and event marketing and communications.
- The student will state the legal issues associated with being an event manager by:
- summarizing the concept of risk management and the ways to handle risk.
- describing the nuances between organizer and suppliers.
- identifying employment law.
- explaining the concept of intellectual property in the event industry.
- identifying potential ethical situations.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
