Course Description

This course is specifically designed to serve the incoming student that does not have familiarity with the Apple Macintosh operating system’s conventions. The Music Industry/Recording Arts program (MIRA-AS) uses Apple computers exclusively, and this course will assist the student that is unfamiliar with the platform get a solid foundation in order to begin their studies. (Note: This course satisfies SPC's computer competency requirement effective Spring 2018).

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will comprehend basic Apple Macintosh operating system characteristics by:
    1. contrasting the Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh operating systems.
    2. identifying the naming conventions used for the pull-down menu items.
    3. defining how the networking file system works.
    4. identifying the application dock.
  2. The student will acquire knowledge of Apple Macintosh file management techniques by:
    1. identifying how the finder is utilized.
    2. defining how the hierarchical filing system nests data.
    3. classifying different file search methods.
    4. defining file suffix types and their uses.
    5. saving a file to it’s proper location on the hard disk.
  3. The student will comprehend the usage of disk utility to optimize the Apple Macintosh operating system by:
    1. identifying what permissions repair does for the optimization process.
    2. defining the hard disk partition process.
    3. applying disk verification techniques.
    4. utilizing the various disk formatting techniques.
  4. The student will acquire knowledge of the key commands used by the Apple Macintosh operating system by:
    1. categorizing the different applications of key commands.
    2. identifying the symbols used to denote what key stokes are to be used in a key command.
    3. differentiating between the Windows keyboard and the Apple keyboard
    4. applying key commands to replace menu choices.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
