Course Description
This course is designed to teach the student basic technical skills needed to understand the function and operation of major elements of personal computer operating system software, and how to localize and correct common software problems. Using current versions, the student will install, maintain, optimize, and troubleshoot operating system software, configure and maintain network settings, configure network resources, and configure and maintain personal computer security. The student will formulate disaster recovery procedures in the event of system failure and implement them as instructed. The student will also install and troubleshoot computer peripherals. This course prepares students for the software portion of the CompTIA A+ Certification exams. (Note: Credit is only given for CET 1172C or CJE 1666).
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will evaluate the function and operation of the personal computer operating system by:
- examining the tools that support and maintain the system.
- managing local user accounts in Windows.
- planning and implementing an operating system installation.
- configuring the operating system after installation.
- using virtual machine software to perform operating system tasks outside of the host system.
- The student will maintain and troubleshoot the personal computer operating system by:
- performing preventive maintenance tasks to keep the operating system healthy.
- executing commands to manage files and hard disk drives.
- optimizing the operating system to improve performance.
- manually removing unwanted or unnecessary software applications.
- applying general strategies to solve computer problems.
- supporting customers on-site or remotely.
- correcting application issues using appropriate operating system tools.
- solving startup problems with the operating system.
- The student will implement wired and wireless network connections by:
- describing protocols and standards the operating system uses for network communication.
- connecting a computer to a wired or wireless network.
- sharing and securing files and folders on a network.
- supporting cloud computing services on a network.
- The student will support mobile device operating systems by:
- identifying significant features of mobile operating systems such as Android and iOS.
- configuring and troubleshooting mobile device operating systems.
- The student will implement computer security necessary to address common security threats by:
- recognizing, removing, and protecting personal computers against malicious software.
- recognizing, removing, and protecting mobile devices against malicious software.
- defining company policies to address issues of software copyright infringement and violations of prohibited content or activities.
- configuring and performing backups of the system or data in preparation for recovery after a potential disaster.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
