Course Description

This course is offered for students desiring experience in various types of technical writing, such as process reports, investigative reports, feasibility studies, instructions, memoranda, and letters. Concentration is on practice in analyzing and developing reports, in collecting and organizing data, and in preparing the formal and informal report. This course has value in the fields of business administration, military, engineering, health, hospitality, law enforcement, architecture, building construction, and science. Assignments are related to the individual interest of the student. (Note: This course has a substantial writing requirement).

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate clear, concise, and accurate memoranda, e-mails, and letters by:
    1. applying appropriate purpose, audience, and format.
    2. using writing conventions.
  2. The student will demonstrate how to plan and write proposals and various kinds of reports by:
    1. planning and preparing written and oral reports.
    2. applying appropriate purpose, audience, and format.
    3. using writing conventions.
  3. The student will write a resume by:
    1. identifying a position in an applicable career field.
    2. researching the qualifications of the position.
    3. formatting all written work appropriately and effectively.
  4. The student will demonstrate the role that technology plays in workplace communication by:
    1. providing examples of effective blogs, wikis, web pages, and social media.
    2. showing the positive and negative aspects of using these technologies.
  5. The student will develop the ability to state and to solve problems in writing by:
    1. identifying a problem at a local level.
    2. finding evidence to support a study.
    3. collecting data through appropriate means including using credible and up-to-date sources.
    4. summarizing data effectively. 
    5. using writing conventions.
    6. using proper citation formats in all assignments.
    7. creating and using effective visuals.
  6. The student will demonstrate writing conventions by:
    1. illustrating clear use of parallelism.
    2. identifying active versus passive voice.
    3. illustrating effective grammar, mechanics, and punctuation.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors. Criteria for Evaluation of Writing: The student will exhibit in his/her writing the characteristics of at least Level 3 in the CLAST Descriptions of Essay Ratings.
