Course Description
This course will provide students with hands-on experience in creating and maintaining a relational database application. Students will learn the various functions and commands of the database as well as how to plan, normalize, create, use, and program fully relational databases for common business applications. Students will learn relational database theory and design, formal naming conventions, and database programming techniques.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will design a complex database to achieve business standards by:
- Planning the structure and format.
- Constructing a relational database with tables, field structure, types and properties.
- Creating an E-R (entity – relationship) diagram.
- Importing and exporting data from and to external programs.
- The student will create forms, queries and reports by:
- Designing, editing and formatting simple and complex forms, queries and reports.
- Setting up calculated fields.
- Employing the use of Structured Query Language (SQL).
- The student will maintain database integrity by:
- Performing backup procedures to ensure safety of data.
- Applying methods for ensuring security in a multi-user environment.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
