Course Description

This is the last clinical practice course with completion leading to graduation from the Respiratory Care Program. It will include pediatric and neonatal respiratory care, home respiratory care, as well as a section for review of all phases previously covered. A "C" or better must be achieved on the Clinical Practice VI Comprehensive Written Program Examination in order to complete the course of study and obtain the award of the Associate in Science in Respiratory Care.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will evaluate, organize, and deliver a prescribed respiratory care regimen for a selected group of critical care patients, simulating on the job performance by:
    1. performing all general care procedures correctly, safely, and as scheduled.
    2. identifying and responding appropriately to all abnormal clinical findings on a general care floor.
    3. demonstrating the successful performance and application of skills related to arterial sampling and analysis.
  2. The student will evaluate, organize, and deliver a prescribed respiratory care regimen for a selected group of critical care patients, simulating on the job performance, by
    1. performing all critical care procedures correctly, safely, and as scheduled
    2. explaining the procedures used to apply and manage an artificial airway
    3. performing compressions, ventilations, and assisting in endotracheal intubation
    4. promptly identifying and responding to all abnormal clinical findings in an ICU
  3. The student will demonstrate professional characteristics compatible with employment in the field by:
    1. adhering to the code of ethics of the American Association of Respiratory Care.
    2. complying with all hospital policies and procedures
    3. participating in physician rounds.
    4. explaining the impact of culture, age, learning styles, and literacy on patient education, communication, and care

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
