Course Description

This course will continue to refine those respiratory care techniques applicable to the critically ill patient with an emphasis on prolonged mechanical ventilation. A laboratory review of the most commonly used ventilators with an emphasis on practical applications will occur. Pediatric and neonatal respiratory care rotations will be included with an emphasis on hands-on clinical practice. Refinement of pulmonary function testing and blood gases skills will be continued.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate the skills required to evaluate, monitor, and care for adult patients with cardiac and respiratory disease, including critically ill patients receiving continuous mechanical ventilation, by
    1. critiquing respiratory care modalities appropriate to the patient's condition.
    2. listing the components used in the evaluation and monitoring of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation patients.
    3. completing, on a timely basis, with minimal supervision and assistance, a designated patient care assignment of basic care which may include aerosol therapy, oxygen devices, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, and pulse-oximetry evaluation.
    4. demonstrating the proper use of supraglottic airways.
  2. The student will demonstrate the skills required to evaluate, monitor, and care for neonatal and pediatric patients with cardiac and respiratory disease, including critically ill patients receiving continuous mechanical ventilation, by
    1. performing a pediatric and neonatal nebulizer treatment.
    2. describing the proper technique for setting up a oxyhood.
    3. explaining the use of neonatal resuscitators.
    4. listing the steps required to perform a capillary blood gas.
    5. demonstrating the technique for securing a neonatal endotracheal tube.
  3. The student will demonstrate professional characteristics consistent with job performance by
    1. adhering to the code of ethics of the American Association for Respiratory Care.
    2. complying with all hospital policies and procedures.
    3. participating in physician rounds.
    4. explaining the impact of culture, age, learning styles, and literacy on patient education, communication, and care.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
