Requisites
Prerequisite RET 1485 with a minimum grade of C
Course Description
This is a course designed to introduce the student to the diagnostic methods and equipment used to interpret and evaluate the status of patients. Emphasis is on diagnostic techniques used in pulmonary function studies, blood gas analysis, cardiac and pulmonary stress testing, metabolic studies, sleep studies, bronchoscopy and pulmonary rehabilitation. The student will recognize alterations from testing data, be able to interpret these alterations with respect to possible diagnosis, degrees of impairment and recommend a treatment regime. The therapeutic techniques and procedures involved in the home and rehabilitative care of the pulmonary patient will follow the presentation of diagnostic procedures. Clinical experience will occur during Clinical Practice IV.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will describe the equipment, techniques and results interpretation of pulmonary function tests by
- analyzing screening spirometry, including hand held and bedside spirometry
- contrasting tidal volume, minute volume, and vital capacity
- explaining diffusion of carbon monoxide (DLCO), diffusion, and closing volume studies
- The student will explain the equipment and techniques used in bronchoscopy assisting by
- contrasting the types of bronchoscopes and light sources available, and the advantages and disadvantages of each
- explaining the indications, contraindications, and hazards of bronchoscopy
- describing the indications, contraindications, and hazards of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)
- discussing the process required to assist a physician in performing bronchoscopy
- The student will describe the equipment, techniques, and results interpretation of a sleep study by
- comparing the components of a polysomnogram
- contrasting obstructive and central sleep apneas
- listing the indications, contraindications, and hazards of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and non invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) titration during sleep
- explaining the indications, contraindications, and hazards of overnight pulse oximetry
- The student will define the purpose, methods, and equipment of pulmonary rehab programs by
- discussing the indications, contraindications, and hazards of a 6-minute walk test
- describe the techniques used in inspiratory muscle training, conditioning programs, and strength training programs
- contrast the advantages and disadvantages of the pulmonary rehab settings
- The student will identify the equipment and techniques used in the home care of a patient with respiratory disease by
- explaining the indications, contraindications, and hazards of apnea monitoring, rocking beds, and pulse oximeters
- listing the indications, contraindications, and hazards of oxygen titration with exercise
- The student will critique the physiological basis, equipment used in, indications, contraindications, hazards, and interpretation of tests used in the diagnosis and care of cardiopulmonary patients by
- describing the standard clinical application of blood gas analysis
- contrasting cardiac and pulmonary stress testing
- explaining echocardiography
- discussing cardiac catheterization
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
