Course Description
This course shall provide a complete review of the modalities and monitoring techniques employed in the care and evaluation of the critically ill patient. The theory and application of ventilatory devices and techniques will be covered in detail. The course will also focus on the theory and application of invasive and non-invasive monitoring of the critically ill patient.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain the techniques and procedures used in invasive monitoring by
- listing the components and clinical application of arterial lines
- describing the components and clinical application of right heart catheters
- identifying the components and clinical application of point-of-care devices
- The student will identify the techniques and procedures used in non-invasive monitoring by
- describing the principle of operation and clinical application of capnography
- discussing the principle of operation and clinical application of transcutaneous oxygen monitoring
- idenifying the principle of operation and clinical application of pneumography and apnea monitoring
- listing the principle of operation and clinical application of indirect calorimetry
- describing the principle and clinical application of ventilator waveforms
- The student will describe ventilatory devices and techniques employed in the care of the critically ill patient by
- discussing the principles of operation and clinical application of all types of life support systems
- explaining the theory and clinical application of alternative ventilatory techniques
- identifying the theory and clinical application of nitric oxide
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
