Course Description

The student will refine those clinical skills introduced in Clinical Practice I. In addition, intermittent positive pressure breathing, chest physiotherapy and sustained maximal inspiratory therapy will be introduced. Laboratory experience precedes in-hospital patient care.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will explain the components of a basic patient assessment by
    1. demonstrating the proper technique for palpating a pulse to determine rate, rhythm and force
    2. identifying a patient's respiratory rate and normal or abnormal breathing patterns
    3. explaining abnormal sensorium
  2. The student will describe the proper techniques for basic respiratory care procedures by
    1. explaining the procedures for inserting an oral pharyngeal and nasal airway
    2. demonstrating the procedures for attachment of supplemental aerosol delivery devices on patients to include: aerosol mask, face tent, Briggs adapter, and tracheostomy mask
    3. describing the procedures for quad, huff, and directed coughing
    4. comparing the procedures for providing an intermittent positive pressure breathing treatment on a patient to include: mouthpiece, mouth seal, and mask
    5. identifying the procedures for providing postural drainage/chest physiotherapy on a patient
    6. explaining terms and procedures related to infection control and its surveillance
    7. demonstrating the procedures for open and nasal suction
    8. discussing the procedures for manual ventilation to an artificial airway
    9. demonstrating the procedures for administering supplemental oxygen during the transportation
    10. listing the drugs and techniques currently available to assist with smoking cessation
    11. explaining the procedures for performing oxygen titration with exercise
    12. demonstrating the proper procedures for initiating, monitoring, adjusting, and discontinuing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
    13. explaining the procedures for sputum induction
  3. The student will demonstrate professional characteristics consistent with job performance by
    1. adhering to the code of ethics of the American Association of Respiratory Care
    2. complying with all hospital policies and procedures
    3. limiting procedures performed to the scope of practice of a respiratory therapists
    4. explaining the components of providing age, literacy, and culturally appropriate smoking cessation counseling

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
